Minnesota Ski Resorts Are Top Winter Vacation Destinations

Minnesota is thought of as a plains state so you may not realize that we have a long list of winter vacation spots where you can ski and snowboard. While we don't have "real" mountains, we have lots of places where you can experience all the rush of downhill skiing.

There are Minnesota ski resorts throughout the state. Most downhill ski areas do some supplemental snow-making to make sure there are great skiing conditions beginning in late fall. Most Minnesota ski areas also offer exciting terrain parks for snowboarders. Many of the resorts that cater to Minnesota summer visitors are in areas where they can also offer special ski packages in winter.

Ski Vacation

Several of our Minnesota ski resorts are "full service" resorts with on-site lodging, restaurants and other amenities. Others are more properly designated as ski areas with all of the expected skiing and snowboarding features however do not have on site lodging. In most of these ski areas you will find that local hotels offer special rates and ski packages.

Minnesota Ski Resorts Are Top Winter Vacation Destinations

Lutsen Mountains Ski Resort is located in the Sawtooth Mountains that rise near Lake Superior. Lutsen has four mountains, named Eagle, Uller, Mystery, and Moose Mountains. The Plunge, a near vertical drop on the North Face of Moose Mountain, is the steepest run in mid-America with a 90% slope. Lutsen is located about 250 miles north of the Twin Cities along the North Shore of Lake Superior and is considered the most popular ski area in Minnesota among serious skiers.

Spirit Mountain Ski Resort is located 150 miles northeast of the Twin Cities in the Lake Superior city of Duluth. During the winter months, in cooperation with many Duluth area hotels, Spirit Mountain offers "Stay and Ski" packages. All of these Duluth hotels are close to Spirit Mountain ski area. Spirit Mountain is a popular ski and snowboard area that appeals to kids and families. They feature a Winter Kids Program that allows parents to enjoy time on the slopes while their children experience a fun and educational approach to winter sports like skiing and snowboarding.

Giants Ridge Ski Resort is located about 200 miles northeast of the Twin Cities in the Iron Range region of the state. Ski Magazine ranked Giant's Ridge as Minnesota's #1 ski resort. Giant's Ridge also has great cross-country skiing. The Lodge at Giant's Ridge offers first class resort amenities for a Minnesota winter getaway.

Buena Vista Ski Area is located near Bemidji, Minnesota about 250 miles north of the Twin Cities metro area and on the continental divide.
