Why mountain vacations? Hmm... Two days ago I was swimming in the Arkansas River. A few days before and an hours drive away, I was playing in the snow at a roadside rest area. Tomorrow I will drive an hour to the trail head and hike to a beautiful mountain lake at 11,000 feet.

Of course, this is all made easier by the fact that we live here in Colorado now. The point however, is the same if you are vacationing here from other places: You get the widest variety of climates and experiences in the shortest time when you vacation in the mountains. Where else can you be hiking a snowy pass in the morning and sunbathing in the desert in the afternoon?

Ski Vacation

It isn't all about the outdoor activities either. There is a unique atmosphere to small mountain towns like Silverton or Buena Vista. The isolation seems to make them immune to the rushing and busyness of the cities. You can walk the streets safely at night, stop in a saloon that may have been there for a hundred years, and see the stars as you walk back to your hotel.

Mountain Vacations

There are ghost towns throughout the mountains of the west. They range from the restored ones that have become parks, to the remnants of small towns left in the weeds. Yesterday my wife and I explored an old abandoned schoolhouse on a back road near Canon City. Last week we poked around an old town site that used to have five grocery stores, nine bars and over a thousand residents. Now there is nothing left but a few foundations where the buildings once stood.

Just driving from one town to the next makes for a scenic and relaxing vacation when you are in the mountains. Even if you don't get out of the car very often, it is enjoyable to look out the windows like you are watching a beautiful scene in a movie. One moment you are staring up at huge cliffs, and a few minutes later you are on top of them looking down on a river winding through a grassy valley.

A Few Tips For Mountain Vacations

- Weather is always unpredictable in mountains. Have clothing for all conditions.

- Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Plan hiking early in the day, and come down from higher elevations before one in the afternoon.

- There can be long stretches between gas stations in many mountain areas, so fill up when you have the chance.

- Altitude can make you sick. The solution is to go lower if this happens.

- There are some dangerous animals in most mountainous areas. We disturbed a six-foot rattle snake while hiking yesterday - just back off as we did in this case. Bears don't normally attack, but may break into coolers and picnic baskets if you leave them unattended outside.

- If your vacation in the mountains is in summer, bring sun block. The sun can be especially severe at higher altitudes.

Many expect their ski gear, specific ski instruction, advanced ski techniques and/or ski lessons to help take their skiing to the next level. If you exhausted all the above mentioned variables and you are still stuck at the same skiing/riding level, where do you look next?

Skiing and snowboarding involves a series of complex movements all lumped together. The physical demands that are placed on the body are so great, that if you are not conditioned for these demands -- then the best ski equipment in the world won't help you! That is where you have to start looking at investing some time in training your body for the slopes.

Skiing and riding requires activity from the entire body. From a training stand-point, one should train by activating the entire body so as to have the most transfer into life and true function as much as possible. However, many exercises and programs still attempt to train the muscles in isolation, which to the body is "unnatural." Not that there is anything wrong with that, since your training is dictated by your goal. However, if your goal is to "winterize" your body and help your on the snow performance, then sitting on a bench and doing preacher curls is probably not the best exercise (unless you are talking about apres ski!).

In an ideal world, your training should help your body solve complex movement problems, so that when you encounter them in real life...your body already has the solution. Remember, your body adapts to how you train it. If your training is slow and rigid then that will be what your body learns and that is how it will move. Conversely, if you want to be fast and explosive, then you will need to introduce those variables into your program. Another important variable is your exercise selection. Think about what kind of exercises you do, whether at home or in the gym.

Are most of your exercises done in standing (like many activities) or are you lying on your back, stomach or sitting in a machine?

Here are some ideas on selecting exercises that can enhance your movement vocabulary:

Exercise in standing (single leg too!).

Move in alternating patterns as well as single limbs (one arm or one leg).

Introduce different speeds (slow to fast).

Combine exercises together (its like multi-tasking for the body).

Move in a variety of planes (forwards, backwards, sideways, diagonal, etc.).

Don't forget to rotate (rotation is vital for human movement and performance).

When you condition and train your body to handle the demands of the slopes, not only will you experience performance gains but you will also lessen your chances of injury. This "insurance policy" is one of the most effective ways to ensure that you can get many more turns on the mountain -- for many years to come!

Lastly, when looking to advance our skiing/riding level, you can never go wrong with upgrading your body. After all, your body needs to last your lifetime. You can buy new ski equipment when it gets old or breaks down. Unfortunately, you can't get a "new you!" Although, with the proper training, you can create a environment to help bring out the best of what you already have. This way, when you decide to pick up new skis or boots, or try some advanced ski techniques or get into some ski lessons...you will be able to get the most out of each and every turn on the slopes.

When you Ski Keystone, you ski not just one but three massive mountains, Dercum, North Peak and the Outback. The town has its origins back in the late 19th century as a railroad staging post for the mining industry. In the early 1970s the town was morphed into a super ski resort by Max and Edna Dercum.

Of the 3 mountains, Dercum can be particularly recommended for Beginners. Lots of green runs wend down the slope overlooking the village. For someone that does not like to spend most of my day getting from point a to point b I was pleasantly surprised the first time I visited the Embassy Suites in South Lake Tahoe.

I was enthralled with the look of the hotel as it reminds me of a castle. I was not prepared for all this hotel had to offer.

First it is located at the base of Heavenly Ski Resort so you can literally hop on Heavenlys gondola and after a spectacular ride you can be at the ski resort in minutes. Heavenly Ski resort resides on the California as well as Nevada state line. New for 2008 will be the Heavenly Sky Flyer at Adventure Peak. This elevated zip line cable ride will take guests on a 50-mile-an-hour thrill ride from the top of Tamarack Express back to the top of the Gondola, a vertical drop of 525 feet. At 3,100 feet, the Heavenly Sky Flyer will be the longest zip line in the lower 48 U.S. states.

Second, the hotel accommodations are very generous and if you belong to a private travel club you can stay for a very reasonable rate. My three favorite accommodations that the Embassy Suites provide are the two room suite, hanging out in the spacious garden atriums in the hotel and the cook to order breakfast., It makes me feel so much more at home and it is great if we bring the kids or other guests as we enjoy the extra space, privacy and everyone gets what they want to eat for breakfast for one inclusive great price.

1) I love the two room concept.Every suite offers a living room with sofa bed, armchair, and a well-lit dining/work table area. The private bedroom features one king or two double beds, a second television, and a bathroom stocked with an ample supply of soaps, shampoo, plush towels, and a hairdryer. All suites contain a stocked mini bar, wet bar, microwave oven, coffeemaker, in-room movies, VCR, and two telephones with voice mail and data port.

2) I thoroughly enjoy the spacious and beautiful atriums. After a day of playing at the mountains or lake, I relax in one of three garden atriums, play in the heated pool, soak in the whirlpool, or visit the fitness center with sauna. These are all activities that I can not do at home so I really take advantage of these amenities.

3) I look forward to the complimentary cook to order breakfast. I love the smell of fresh bacon and hot steaming coffee, pancakes, french toast, and omelets, Everyone gets what they want and I don not have to clean up!. The Echo Restaurant offers new American cuisine, as well as classic entrees. The Lounge features the exclusive 180-degree bar and outdoor patio seating.

Third, the Embassy Suites is next door to Harrahs and Mont Bleu casinos if you want a change of pace, a little gambling, see a show, watch a sporting event, dancing etc. they are within walking distance In my opinion it is the most fun and greatest amount of variety you can get in such a short period of time.

After reading tons of reviews, I decided to try the Volkl Mantra out for myself. Pricing seemed reasonable, at least. I wasn't disappointed - after hitting the small slopes at one of Ohio's only ski resorts, I found that the Mantra made what are sometimes dull hills fun because I could easily ski over or through many of the 'rough spots' often associated with small, low-budget resorts. It opened up more areas of the hills for me - not that I couldn't have handled them before, but these skis made it almost as invigorating as the mainstream slopes. So I found this to be a great set of skis for all areas of the slopes - no matter how the snow and ice is packed.

About a month later, I finally got to take my new skis west to the mountains on a ski trip with my wife and some friends. Again, my Volkl Mantras were up to the task and by the end of the trip my friend wanted to buy my set from me! I can only describe the ride as clean: easy to maneuver and quick, though despite some reviews I wouldn't exactly consider this a racing ski - it's far too wide. It does move pretty fast for a powder ski and the extra width seems to add a lot of stability around quick turns. The skis handled great on everything! Powder, bumps, crud, groomed, you name it - I even took them over ice!

I ski a lot around my home town but I only get to take two big trips a year. I always take two skis with me, and I can say that from now on my Mantras will always be one of them! Great for just good, all-around fun on the slopes. I can highly recommend Volkl Mantra skis, especially to anyone who falls in the medium to high skill level category.

Let’s face it, packing for a beach vacation is a walk in the park compared to packing for a ski vacation. With a beach vacation you drop a few pairs of shorts and tops and your swimsuit into your bag and you’re ready to go.

Not so for a ski vacation. If you’re bringing your own ski equipment you have your skis, boots, poles and bulky ski pants and jacket. What’s a ski enthusiast to do?

If you’re driving to a nearby ski resort or area, packing all that equipment isn’t much of a problem. But, if you’re flying on your ski vacation, there are a couple options which will make the packing much easier.

First, you might want to consider leaving your ski equipment at home and renting your boots, skis and poles at the resort. Of course, you may be the type to be horrified at the thought of using rented equipment. But, you might want to weigh your discomfort with the hassle and inconvenience of packing and traveling with these bulky items.

If the idea of renting equipment is worse than the inconvenience of traveling with your own equipment, then perhaps you might think about shipping your ski equipment and clothes to the resort ahead of time, so that they will be there for you when you arrive. Be sure to call the lodge or resort ahead of time to make sure they will accept and hold the package. In most cases they probably will. Be sure, of course, to tip them well for their efforts, and send the package to yourself, in care of the resort. Shipping can be overnight, two-day, or three-day depending on how far it has to go. You may even find that shipping your equipment to yourself is cheaper than paying the airline for the extra baggage.

Besides your equipment, ski clothes and other warm winter wear, what else must you pack for your ski vacation? Well, here’s where packing for a beach vacation and packing for a ski vacation is similar. For both types of vacations you need to make sure you bring your sun block. Many people make the mistake of thinking they’re out on the snow and don’t need protection. When the sunlight reflects from the snow and hits your skin you could end up with a nasty sunburn, so do lotion up before skiing. Also, you want to make sure your lips are protected with a good lip balm.

In addition, as with a beach vacation, you want to make sure to stay hydrated. Again, many people think they don’t need as much water because it’s not hot. Wrong! When you engage in any activity for an extended period of time, you have a tendency to sweat and can lose up to a quart of water per hour. Skiing is certainly an activity that causes fluid loss, so it’s wise to carry a couple quarts of water with you.

The easiest way to carry water while skiing is with a hydration pack. You can buy a simple hip pack or a vest hydration pack that fits around your chest containing a reservoir, with a tube that transports the water from the reservoir to your mouth. Expect to pay anywhere from $40 to $80 for a good hydration pack, which can also be used for other sports such as hiking or cycling.
